THE SCHOOL COLORS

Dr. W. E. B. Du Bois lived the latter part of his life in the country of Ghana.  Ghana is a country in West Africa, and the first President of the country was the Honorable Kwame Nkrumah.  President Nkrumah is considered to be the father-figure of Pan-Africanism, liberating Ghana from British rule at the beginning of the 1960's at a time when most other African countries were colonies.  Nkrumah was both an activist and a visionary.  He invited Dr. Du Bois to Ghana in order to research and publish a multi-volume work -- The Encyclopedia Africana.

In honor of Dr. Du Bois the colors of the W. E. B. Du Bois Academy Charter School will be the colors of the Ghana Flag.  The Ghana Flag consists of the colors red, gold, and green in horizontal stripes with a five-pointed star in the center of the gold stripe.  The colors represent the following:

Red:  The blood of those who died in the country's struggle for independence

Gold:  The mineral wealth of the country

Green: Symbolizes the country's rich forest

The Black Star: Stands for the lodestar of African freedom

The W. E. B. Du Bois Academy Charter School is honored to adopt these colors to represent our institution in tribute to the legacy of a great humanitarian: Dr. W. E. B. Du Bois
