Frank Whelan Smith

For more than two decades now, Frank Whelan Smith has been involved in spiritually and intellectually based movements for justice, equity, personal and social transformation, and the renewal of hope and faith. Frank Whelan Smith is the former Senior Assistant Provost at Hofstra University. He was also the University's Affirmative Action Officer. In these capacities, he was charged with the responsibility of providing equal educational opportunity to African-Americans, Latinos, and others who historically have been denied access to higher education.  He is a graduate of Columbia University's Teacher's College where he earned the Master of Arts and the Master of Education degrees.  Frank Whelan Smith has taught courses in African history, African-American History and American History.

He has received several citations for his progressive teaching and commitment to the education of all people. His contributions and dedication to educational access were recognized when he was appointed by the New York State Education Commissioner to serve on the Statewide Committee on Educational Opportunity. He has received awards from the Nassau County Executive, the New York State Senate and Assembly, One Hundred Black Men and several community based organizations.  Frank Whelan Smith served three terms as President of the Higher Education Opportunity Program-Professional Organization (HEOP-PO).

He has served as a consultant to the New York State Education Department on several occasions, and he is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Black Archives of Film and Broadcasting, Inc.  He is also the former host of the weekly WKJY Radio broadcast, "African-American Beat." Frank Whelan Smith believes in the integrity of our children. He believes that they must be educationally and morally prepared for the next millennium., therefore, he believes that they must have access to the very best education we can provide
